Video Fluoroscopy
Video Fluoroscopy is, quite simply, an x-ray machine that allows you to see the bone and joints of the spine and extremities in motion.
The procedure is simple and painless, and generally takes less than a minute to perform. The best part is the motion x-rays are saved to a computer in the office and are immediately available to be viewed by both doctor and patient.
Why Video Fluoroscopy?
Regular x-rays allow you to see the spine and joints in the form of a static picture. And although regular x-rays are useful, motion x-rays go one step further.
Video Fluoroscopy actually allows the doctor to take that static picture and put it into motion; to see whether the spine and joints are actually moving and functioning the way they’re supposed to.
Why Is Proper Joint Motion Important?
Spinal joints that no longer work or move properly can cause any number of problems, including headaches, neck and back pain, stiffness, or numbness and tingling in their hands or feet. They can even lead to early onset of arthritis since joints that don’t move properly can break down more quickly.
Why Do Joints Stop Moving / Properly?
In most cases, spinal joints stop working properly for one of two reasons:
1. Trauma: Falls, car accidents, contact sports, and hard physical activity can cause the joints in certain areas of the spine to stop working properly over a short period of time.
2. Wear and Tear: Repetitive use, poor posture and physical labor are some of the key players in this type of joint injury. The joints stop working properly over a long period of time.
My treatment approach is simple: With the help of motion x-ray (video fluoroscopy), I can evaluate the joints of the spine and determine whether there might be a joint injury causing your symptoms.
The best part is, this technology actually allows you to see the injury for yourself. In many cases, if normal motion is restored to these joints the symptoms go away.
If regular x-rays are like looking at a car, video fluoroscopy is like starting that car and taking it for a test drive.
